Perimeter security barriers for commercial airports - photoCommercial airports are one of the major hubs of U.S. transportation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) classifies 546 airports as "commercial service" airports. The top ten U.S. airlines operate over 400,000 commercial flights each month. Most of the U.S. airports built their runways and terminals decades ago. It was different time and a different era and the security requirements were vastly different than those required today.

The perimeter security at most airports consists of cyclone fencing topped by barded wire or concertina wire. Occasional Jersey barriers are also used. The physical barriers are sometimes combined with electronic perimeter security devices to complete a comprehensive perimeter security system.

Since the tragedy of 9/11, the U.S. government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars improving the internal security, X-ray devices, baggage screening machinery, and other programs to stop potential hijackers or terrorists. While the government recognizes the need to substantially upgrade U.S. commercial airport perimeter security, the funding is lacking.

Airport perimeter security remains at risk. In the summer of 2004, a car swerved off the perimeter road, penetrated a cyclone fence, and the driver found himself inside the secure perimeter of Midway Airport in Chicago. This was an accident. If that driver had been a terrorist with a truck packed with explosives and had headed for the terminal building or an airplane loaded with fuel, the results would have been tragic.

The Metalith physical security barrier wall system can quickly and simply solve the perimeter barrier penetration problem with our U.S. Department of State K12-certified crash barriers. Not only are the barriers well suited to stop penetrating vehicles, they serve a dual purpose of providing blast mitigation protection.

Infrastructure Defense Technologies' Metalith earth filled anti-crash, anti-blast, barriers can provide a number of security solutions at U.S. commercial airports. These include:

  • Airport perimeter security barriers and barrier walls
  • Perimeter, access control, and terminal anti-ram vehicle barriers
  • Blast mitigation barriers
  • Fuel storage area perimeter security barriers / blast containment barriers
  • Airplane storage area perimeter security barriers
  • Equipment storage area perimeter security barriers
  • Cargo storage perimeter security barriers
  • Cargo quarantine area perimeter security barriers
  • Blast containment barriers/ explosion containment area barriers
  • Facility segregation barriers

Our Metalith perimeter security K12 anti-ram vehicle barriers and blast mitigation barriers and walls are designed to stop the unwanted airport perimeter vehicular intrusions by eliminating the ability to bypass a checkpoint or access control point and still gain entry to airport's non-terminal areas.
