Federal facilities/operationsThe U.S. government controls a wide range of federal facilities or operations that have physical security requirements. Some of these include:
U.S. Embassies, Consulates, and Foreign BuildingsThe federal government of the United States owns and operates a vast array of buildings and facilities to serve the U.S. public. Most of these facilities are located within the borders of the United States, but some are located on foreign soil. These embassy buildings, consulates, and other overseas buildings are more at risk today than ever before. The U.S. Department of State and the Department of Overseas Building Operations are responsible for most of these facilities. The Metalith physical security barrier system has been designed and engineered to protect personnel and critical infrastructure assets from the harmful effects of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), explosive devices placed near facility walls, and offers force protection from small arms fire and even RPGs. The Metalith barriers have been certified as K12 barriers by the U.S. Department of State, their highest crash barrier rating. Infrastructure Defense Technologies' Metalith anti-crash, anti-blast barriers can provide a number of physical security solutions for our embassies, consulates, and other foreign buildings. These include
Border Security OperationsThe Metalith barriers may also provide an excellent solution to the border entry problems we face. Since 9/11, the United States government has made it harder to obtain visas and legal immigration methods have become harder for terrorists to use. It is reasonable to assume terrorists may respond to this visa tightening by pursuing illegal border crossings, as some have already done. The U.S.- Mexican border is nearly 2,000 miles long and the U.S.-Canadian border is nearly 4,00 miles long. If terrorists are denied visas, then sneaking in illegally is the obvious next option available to pursue. They can illegally enter the U.S. by crossing the border from Mexico or Canada, by jumping off of ships in ports, or via some other method as opportunities present themselves. It is possible that future terrorists may try to enter the country illegally more than they ever have in the past. While the Metalith physical security barriers are not suited to solve many of the problems that may be faced from illegal entry across our borders, they do provide some potential applications such as:
National LaboratoriesFor more than fifty years, the United States' group of energy laboratories has tackled problems vital to the nation's military and energy security. Early in the history of our national laboratories, activity was dominated by weapons research and by a mission to pursue research that evolved directly from their earliest explorations of nuclear energy. Today, our national laboratories have had their mandate modified to include work directed toward solving the nation's most significant problems related to the production of all forms of energy, as well as their associated health, and environmental consequences. Additionally, recent efforts have also been directed at developing technologies to help combat worldwide terrorism activities. The Metalith physical security barrier system can be used to augment current electronic security and physical security systems by providing:
Federal BuildingsMost of the federal buildings are owned and operated by the Government Services Administration, the GSA. GSA works with over 100 agencies to house a million federal workers and manages the disposal of excess federal real property. The GSA's Public Building Service (PBS) is the landlord of the civilian federal government, with a total inventory of over 330 million square feet of workspace for a million federal employees in 2,000 American communities. This comprises over 1,600 government-owned buildings, or approximately 55 percent of GSA's total inventory. The remaining 45 percent is in privately owned leased facilities. Each GSA office building, laboratory, and courthouse is a symbol of America's democracy, and a significant public investment that must contribute to the vitality of its neighboring community. While the function of the various GSA federal buildings is very diverse, some require increased physical security. The Metalith physical security barriers can assist with this need by acting as:
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a former independent agency that became part of the new Department of Homeland Security in March 2003, is tasked with responding to, planning for, recovering from and mitigating against disasters. At that time, FEMA joined 22 other federal agencies, programs and offices in becoming the Department of Homeland Security. The new department, headed by Secretary Tom Ridge, brought a coordinated approach to national security from emergencies and disasters, both natural and man-made. Today, FEMA is one of four major branches of DHS. Possible FEMA uses for Metalith barrier walls include:
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) employs 18,000 people across the country, including the headquarters offices in Washington, DC, 10 regional offices, and more than a dozen labs. In 1970 EPA was assigned the monumental task of repairing the damage already done to the natural environment and to establish new criteria to guide make a cleaner environment a reality. Metalith physical security barriers are better suited for the work performed on-site by the EPA rather than to EPA infrastructure assets. Potential uses of Metalith barriers by the EPA include:
