Under-Vehicle Surveillance Equipment

A device which aids in the inspection of the underside of a vehicle.

Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)

Military munitions that have been primed, fused, armed, or otherwise prepared for action, and that has been fired, dropped, launched, projected, or placed in such a manner as to constitute a hazard to operations, installation, personnel, or material and that remains unexploded by malfunction, design, or any other cause.  

Uniform Illumination

Relationship between light and dark areas of illumination usually expressed as a ratio.

United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM)

By its resolution 687 of 3 April 1991, the United Nations Security Council established the terms and conditions for the formal cease-fire between Iraq and the coalition of Member States co-operating with Kuwait. Section C of this resolution called for the elimination, under international supervision, of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles with a range greater than 150 kilometers (km), together with related items and production facilities. It also called for measures to ensure that the acquisition and production of prohibited items were not resumed. The United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) was set up to implement the non-nuclear provisions of the resolution and to assist the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the nuclear areas. The precise terms are laid out in paragraphs 7 to 13 of the resolution.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a pilotless, reusable, heavier-than-air craft. UAV’s are commonly used for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering, differing from a “Drone” which is a remote controlled target designed for artillery practice.

Unobstructed Space

Space within 10 meters (33 feet) of an inhabited building that does not allow for concealment from observation of explosive devices 150 mm (6 inches) or greater in height.

Unoccupied Facility

A facility where personnel are not usually present. Includes magazines, unmanned sewerage treatment plants, Hardened Aircraft Shelters, etc. An unoccupied facility may at any given time have personnel present .

Utilities

Air and ventilation ducts, water and power supply, culverts and storm drains, etc.

Utility Vehicle

Includes cargo, water, fuel and recovery vehicles.

UVSS

Acronym for Under Vehicle Surveillance System. This system is used primarily to detect bombs.
