W
Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD)
According to the National Defense Authorization Act: Any weapon or device that is intended, or has the capability, to cause death or serious bodily injury to a significant number of people through the release, dissemination, or impact of (A) toxic or poisonous chemicals or their precursors; (B) a disease organism; or (C) radiation or radioactivity.
1. A classification that includes all nuclear, biological and chemical weapons/agents, and radiological dispersal devices (US Army Field Manual). 2. Any device, material, or substance used in a manner, in a quantity or type, or under circumstances evidencing intent to cause death or serious injury to persons or significant damage of property. (Landesman definition).

Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Tactic
Contaminating the air supply, water supply, or grounds of a facility by introducing chemical, biological, or radiological agents. The aggressor's goal is to kill or injure people. See Weapons of Mass Destruction.
Weapons Retirement
The process by which nuclear weapons are determined to be obsolete or unnecessary for national defense. A retired weapon or weapon system is no longer in an active status or deliverable, but may still be a fully functioning nuclear device.
Wedge Barriers
Steel rectangles that raise a formidable edge above the surface of the road to stop an intruding vehicle.
Wide Area Surveillance
The practice of monitoring a large outdoor area for specific occurrences through automated means. Such areas normally exceed 1/4 mile.
X
X-Ray Bomb
A bomb triggered to explode when exposed to x-rays. See Bomb.
Z
Zone
A section of an alarmed, protected, or patrolled area. A zone often means a space having one or more sensors.
Zone of Fire
The area covered by a unit's or vehicle's weapons.
