The Association of American railroads reports there are nearly 142,000 miles of railroad tracks in the U.S. Amtrak operates ~500 passenger stations. Private freight companies operate nearly 21,000 locomotives pulling almost 470,000 freight cars. Greyhound operates over 100 company-operated bus terminals. We have 590,000 bridges in the United States for both rail and highway and some 500 have been identified as critical based on facility size, traffic volume, and strategic importance. Current military and engineering judgment indicates that the complete protection of key facilities from destruction is not feasible or cost effective. In protecting assets, States have been encouraged to follow the Department of Defense "4-D" approach: "deter, detect, defend and design."
