Highway, rail, truck and bus

Perimeter security barriers for highway, rail, truck and bus facilities - photoThe U.S. transportation infrastructure is massive. The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that our Interstate Highway system contains 42,000 miles of multi-lane, limited access highways, with thousands of overpasses. These 42,000 miles are part of the 160,000-mile National Highway System.

The Association of American railroads reports there are nearly 142,000 miles of railroad tracks in the U.S. Amtrak operates ~500 passenger stations. Private freight companies operate nearly 21,000 locomotives pulling almost 470,000 freight cars.

Greyhound operates over 100 company-operated bus terminals. We have 590,000 bridges in the United States for both rail and highway and some 500 have been identified as critical based on facility size, traffic volume, and strategic importance.

Current military and engineering judgment indicates that the complete protection of key facilities from destruction is not feasible or cost effective. In protecting assets, States have been encouraged to follow the Department of Defense "4-D" approach: "deter, detect, defend and design." The overall practical objective of the counter-terrorism measures being pursued is not to provide full protection, but to reduce exposure through techniques such as:

  • Denial of access to key structures through barriers and fencing
  • Minimizing time-on-target through surveillance cameras and patrolling
  • Hardening key facilities through blast shielding and strengthening of structures, and
  • Reducing access to tunnel vents to protect them from biological/chemical attack

Metalith physical security, anti-blast, anti-crash barriers have applications in land transportation industries as:

    • Major truck terminal perimeter security barriers
    • Suspicious truck cargo isolation barriers
    • Amtrak passenger terminal blast and crash barriers
    • Freight terminal blast and crash barriers
    • Bus terminal perimeter security barriers
    • Blast mitigation barriers
    • Critical bridge approach access barriers
    • Highway sound barriers

The Metalith perimeter security system barriers are U.S. Department of State K12 certified crash barriers. They also offer excellent blast mitigation, blast containment, and protection for public transportation infrastructure assets and facilities requiring excellent physical security.
